What to check before you buy.
Questions worth asking any supplier before you buy substrate, thermostats, or enclosures — general quality checks that apply regardless of where you shop.
Heating equipment
An unregulated or poorly calibrated heat source is one of the most common causes of preventable harm in a captive setup. A proper thermostat with correctly placed probe sensing keeps a heat source within a safe range automatically. Cheap, uncalibrated units can drift several degrees off their displayed reading — enough to matter at the margins of a safe temperature range. Ask any supplier how their thermostats are calibrated and what accuracy tolerance they specify.
Substrate
Check that substrate is free of pesticide and fertiliser residue and any sharp or ingestible debris, and that it suits the humidity range you need — some substrates hold moisture well, others are meant to stay dry and drain quickly. Substrate marketed generically as “soil” or “compost” without further detail is a common source of contamination; purpose-made substrate is a safer default even at a higher price.
Enclosure build quality
Inspect every seam, vent, and door mechanism for gaps, and test hinges and latches under light pressure rather than just checking that they look closed. Mesh panel gauge matters — fine mesh is necessary for small or thin-bodied occupants, coarser mesh may be acceptable for larger ones. A supplier who can answer specific questions about mesh gauge and seal quality is a good sign.
Where it's fine to save money
Spend more where failure has a real consequence — heating, escape-proofing, ventilation — and save where it does not, such as purely cosmetic decor or background panels. A cheaper safety-critical product that fails can cost far more in remediation than the price difference would have saved.
